VICE's Akil Gibbons travels to Louisiana to meet “the slavery detective of the south,” genealogist Antoinette Harrell who tracks down cases of modern-day slavery and abusive labor practices. We talk to a man, Arthur Miller, whose family was held in slavery on a Mississippi plantation well into the 1960s. Antoinette explains how she uses archives and word of mouth on plantations to uncover stories of how slavery was perpetuated long after the Civil War ended.

Rakem Balogun, an outspoken black activist in Dallas, is considered the first person to be targeted as a “Black Identity Extremist”. After being detained for nearly 6 months on weapons charges, VICE met up with Rakem on the day he was released from prison to learn more about the events leading to his arrest and real-world repercussions of the new “Black Identity Extremist” label.

J’ouvert is a wild, pre-dawn street masquerade that marks the beginning of Caribbean Carnival. Over the past decade, more than 20 people have been shot and killed in and around the festival, leading many to associate the event with violence.

Carey Gabay, a former aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, was fatally shot by a stray bullet in 2015. Last year, Tyreke Borel, 17, and Tiarah Poyau, 22, were the victims of gun violence. Participants from the Caribbean neighborhoods claim authorities have changed the narrative of J’Ouvert (Creole for "daybreak"), which was created to celebrate the emancipation from slavery. Now that the timing of the celebration has changed, the community believes the lack of respect for tradition could bring forth new problems.
